All experienced musicians, as Winchester 7 & the Runners they draw on their readily apparent sonic chemistry and accomplished songwriting talent to create music that’s hook-driven and utterly charming.
Now back with their album release ‘Heart Of The Golden Mystics’ the band aim to take on genre boundaries and shoot them through the barrel of eight (tracks).

‘The Saint Simon Killer Returns’, opens its attack by hitting the target in one through its indie rock classics – The Clash meets The Kooks here through deep Britpop tones and distorted heavily revered guitar strums and vocals. An air of the 80s also shines through here in mixing techniques.

Doing away with guitars altogether, the chord work is handled by Winchester’s electric ukulele, and the Runners round out the sound with drums and bass (Jack Kane and Phil Voorhees, respectively). Heart of the Golden Mystics is the trio’s fifth studio album and it serves up another delicious helping of the playful, energetic rock music for which they are known.

The album begins with The Saint Simon Killer Returns, a high-energy number that centers around a punchy, two-chord riff. Arpeggiated keyboard lines and electronic drum hits give the song a nice, digital veneer without sacrificing the raw intensity. The chorus leans into a bit of psychedelia with its use of suspended chords and lines like “Feel the sun on your face / breathe release and escape”. There’s a definite, early Tame Impala vibe to this one. Very cool!

Winchester 7: We are Winchester 7 & the Runners

Is there a story behind your stage name?

Winchester 7: Well, I’m Winchester 7!

Phil: And we were runners, though technically, we all are now.

Jack: You see, we come from the same place, originally. It was…a sort of community.

Phil: A closed society which shared similar ideals.

Jack: Until Phil and I got some different ones in our heads, anyway.

Phil: We decided that we wanted to see the world…or those parts of it which we had not seen.

Jack: I mean, we knew that there were other places. We’re not daft! We just, collectively, believed that we had all we needed where we were.

Phil: So, we set out to broaden our horizons.

Jack: And then ol’ Win came along.

Winchester 7: Everyone had a job to do. Mine just happened to be to try to persuade those who wanted to leave that they really didn’t.

Jack: We thought that we’d left it well and good behind when we decided to set up camp for the night and play a little music.

Winchester 7: I remember hearing drums and bass in the distance. I followed the sound and, as I got closer….well, it was kind of mesmerizing… I had my ukulele with me and just joined in!

Phil: It was a big surprise!

Jack: But the thing Is, Win doesn’t play the ukulele the way you might think it would be played.

Winchester 7: So, we decided to form a band!

Phil: We were better off together than apart.

Jack: And we never did go back.

Winchester 7: Instead, we spent years traveling around the world perfecting our sound. Though we each, eventually, would settle in different parts of the world that experience forever connected us.

You might have noticed in your local guitar shops lately, that they are all tending to keep some kind of an inventory for them. People speak about a “revival” of sorts regarding the instrument. I question the sense of “revival,” though. I’ve bought my fair share of ukuleles as well in recent history, a friend of mine, a local Portland artist by the name of Thumpergraph, turned me on to them by demonstrating how you could play just about anything on one. He showed me the infamous viral video of “While My Uke Gently Weeps” by Jake Shmabukuro. I was a bit stunned. I had no idea that the Uke could be such a versatile instrument. And that in part is why I question the sense of “revival,” so to speak. Prior to my edification about the instrument, I only thought of it as the thing a guy in a Hawaiian shirt would strum while the girls danced at a Luau. That to me was a pretty specific, so as I watch people incorporate new ways of playing an Uke, it’s not so much a revival in my mind as it is an evolution. Case and point, today’s artist the Winchester 7 & the Runners. Like the epiphanies I apperceived before, when I listened to the band’s new EP “Heart of the Golden Mystics” (streaming everywhere December 22nd); I had to do an audible “double take,” once I found out it is indeed a “Uke” centered in the rhythm section and electrified, producing their eclectic Classic Rock meets New Wave sound.

On the technical front, it’s actually their third appearance this year – you might remember them from appearing here at the very start of 2022 with a review we wrote up on the album Catacomb Songs as January kicked into gear, or perhaps later on in that same month with a special interview we ran on the SBS Podcast…and if you don’t remember that stuff, click those links! Our history together runs even deeper…we’ve technically been listening since around the 2020 mark with the album Argos Holiday, and I wrote about one of their singles called “Beneath The Moon And The Stars” in 2021, which I can still recall by memory to this very day if I’m not playin’ it on the ol’ playlist over here. You get the idea – I’ve been listening! And it’s because I’ve been listening that I can speak to the fact that Winchester 7 & The Runners has really started to surge into their prime on this new record.

People so rarely want to talk to me more than once a lifetime, let alone twice in a single year – so cheers to you, and many thanks for comin’ on back to us to talk some more tunes. There must be something exciting going on…hmmm…if only I could figure out what it was…I wonder what it could be…OH RIGHT – a whole new record! Like I could possibly forget – I probably just posted it up in review at our pages not too long ago…it’s not only still fresh in my mind, it’s still spinning on my playlists over here. Ya did a stellar job on Heart Of The Golden Mystics…and we’ll get to that, I promise. In between the last time we talked on the SBS Podcast and this here interview now, how did you go about preparing for the brand-new album? What changes did you make in between your last record & this one…what was the main priority for you on this album?

Winchester 7: Thank you! It’s terrific to be back and to have the opportunity to talk with you and your readers about the new record.

Jack: We really liked the review too, thank you very much!

Phil: Your love of our New Order cover was quite welcome.

Winchester 7: We worked hard on that one, and indeed the whole album.

But how did we prepare? Well, it probably sounds silly, but I suspect that it boils down to that we watched a lot of mysteries.

Jack: We wrote a song, Miss Merry’s Memoriam, that we imagined would suit a group of mourners at a funeral. Then, with a victim decided, at some point, Win suggested we write a sequel to our song, The Saint Simon Killer.

Phil: The Saint Simon Killer Returns!

Winchester 7: And that ended up being a jumping off point for us! With those songs finished, we started talking whether there may be more story to tell…and one thing really lead to another.

Jack: It’s not a concept album though.

Phil: It’s more a collection of songs which are inter-related.

However buried in its underbelly is a complex and intriguing concept. “The album takes our work in a new direction. Remaining varied in musical influence, it puts a murder mystery to music where we know the killer from the start. Or do we?” states Winchester 7, on discussing the 7-track recording. For those still strangely unaware of just who this band is, Winchester 7 & the Runners is a ukulele rock band, consisting of bandleader, vocalist and ukulele maestro Winchester 7, and virtual Runners Phil Voorhees (bass) who resides in Amsterdam, and Jack Kane (drums) who is itinerant in the UK.

Though Winchester 7 & the Runners are authentically independent, they are at risk of being swept into the mainstream maelstrom, due to the sheer force of their songwriting and performing prowess, which is becoming more and more difficult to contain within a niche indie market.

The “Heart of the Golden Mystics” album speaks for itself, and for the band. It’s a fresh, captivating and devilishly clever project, and one of the most thrilling and singular alternative rock albums released this year, independent or not.

Here’s how it went.

* * *

Hi Win – great to catch up, congratulations on the wonderful new project! What’s the album all about, how and why did you craft it?

Hey, Rebecca and team – how have you been? Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure. You’re very kind, thank you.

So, the easiest answer, I suppose, is that there never was really any doubt in our minds that we would record a follow-up to our 2020 release, Argos Holiday. However, the conditions within which we did that ended up somewhat adrift from what we first imagined.

When we finished up Argos, we were all set to tour to promote its release. But, it was a record that started before the thick of the pandemic, continued throughout lockdown, and was released in a period of uncertainty.

We thought that we would spend the early part of this year touring and doing press to promote it. But, 2021 has proven a year of ebb and flow in our fight as travel restrictions and further lockdown policies have remained impacting.

So, we set about working on Catacomb Songs, again largely using our home studios with tracking out of my own Sanctuary Studio; with an idea that much of its content would end up reflecting our shared experience. I think that, as a result, there’s a bit of that turmoil lurking as a common thread throughout, amidst wistfulness and hope.

You open with Dead Celebrities and New Beginnings – a beautiful ukulele lead, as is your trademark – what does this song mean to the collection, and what inspired you to write it?

Well, thank you! I’m always excited when somebody appreciates that, but “trademark”? Awesome, thank you very much.

So, interestingly, that song was the last one we recorded with its mix only finishing up in early December as the cover art was being finalized.

Our writing process usually begins with my coming up with a chord progression or riff that I’ll bring to the band to help work out an arrangement. Somewhere in there, things start to get a little complex and we swear that we’ll write something simpler the next time round.

For us, that moment seems to happen when we know that we’re working on what will be the last track for a pending release and have run out of opportunity and time to do so. The same thing happened to us with the recording of Dirty Laundry on Argos. Maybe it’s a letter D thing…

Anyway, we were ever so happy to have arrived at an arrangement that was pleasingly simpler than much of the rest of what we recorded for Catacomb Songs. And, as is often the case, we still had no lyrics for it, at all.

We did have an idea though. We thought we’d focus on the fact that holographic entertainers are giving concerts to live audiences. If that sort of thing can experience modern success, well beyond the grave, you and I certainly should be worth some new beginnings.

In that way, it really proved the cornerstone to the album itself. It’s some of that hope that we have for better days, really.

The album is equal parts infectious and topical. What comes to you first when writing, a concept or a catchy melody?

Thank you! I’d have to say that we work out the foundation for the song before anything else. It most always begins with a riff or chord progression before we settle on an arrangement.

We usually then arrive at a concept or phrase that comes to mind and it ends up being a jumping off point from which the rest of the lyrics are written. Once that is squared away, to me, it always seems as if the melody was right there from the start.

Has your style or your song writing mind-set changed at all since the last release?

I think so. We’re always trying to grow as artists and introduce new sounds. On this album, we really benefited from realizing an opportunity to work with our new mix engineer, Jon Paz.

Jon brought some new sensibilities and an analog outboard mix into the process. That really helped us to lean into our analog groundings and draw out some elements which we haven’t explored before.

...

I’m in!

It was just back in December of last year that Winchester 7 & The Runners ended up on my radar & my playlists over here via checking out their last record, the Argos Holiday EP, which made for a stellar introduction into what this crew is all about & the wild Indie/Alt-Rock vibes they’re pumping out into this world of ours. Didn’t take all that much to get my attention here with this new single of theirs called “Beneath The Moon And The Stars” – I’d say it’s mighty safe to assume that Winchester 7 & The Runners & I all get down on similar vibes & the music we choose to listen to for sure. Tons of ear-catching texture & tones to dig on in their latest cut – I liked it right away, and I continued to become more addicted to this single as I listened for sure.

Winchester 7 & the Runners recently sent out the pre-release singles “Ever Said” and “The Song That You Sing”, which are to be included in an upcoming EP. Choosing a favorite out of these two, or any other Winchester 7 & the Runners songs, is a difficult task; they’re quite different from each other, and all are excellent in their own right.

With their curious, angular ukulele-driven rock songs, the hyper-literate lyrics and laconic vocals of their lead singer, Winchester 7 & the Runners are hard to fit into any one box. What strikes the listener about “The Song That You Sing” is how refreshingly free of modern convention it is, in terms of both structure and sound. It has nothing, but somehow everything, to do with this era of rock n’ roll.

Music Authentic: Welcome to Music Authentic! Let’s begin with our site-traditional question: How did you sleep last night?

Winchester 7: Rather well, thank you. I had a weird dream though. I was in a hotel room with Noel Gallagher and some of his family and friends where they were celebrating his birthday. He brought out a bass guitar and a friend of his started playing this small keyboard that had a turntable built into it. They did this sort of funky jam as I admired a glossy photo printer that sat nearby, beneath the television. His wife printed something on it and told me that it was something that they always brought along to have plenty of headshots for fan autographs.

Winchester 7: It always seems best when it begins with the music. I’ve got some lyric ideas sitting around that I hope to come back to at some point, but without music they always seem to end up sounding more like limericks.

Phil: There once was a Win with a uke…

Jack: [laughs] So, usually, it happens when we’re jamming together or when Win bring something to us that he has in mind. We’ll flesh it out together and go as far as recording it, drums, and bass; before he goes off and comes back with some lyrics.

Winchester 7: They typically come to mind as a phrase or an idea that I build around and then we finish off as a group. Then, we add vocals, solos, and final touches before sending off for mix.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

Winchester 7: Paul McCartney!
Jack: Macca
Phil: Peter Hook

Now, the unique one man band project released the new album entitled ‘Argos Holiday’. This album has 9 original tracks, well 7, plus 2 bonus tracks actually. As always, Winchester 7 is the man behind everything. Singing every lyric, playing every note, producing the whole project from top to bottom.

This new album ‘Argos Holiday’, is filled with electric riffs, distorted guitars and even though this is a one man band project…. really excellent harmonies! A lot of positive vibes and easy to rock along with melodies. There’s a real retro indie feel to the album. A marriage between classic and new age rock.

This song starts with a cresending fuzzy electric guitar introduction that leads into the quiet but powerful halfharmonic vocals, the drums are simple but do the job of keeping the song in track.

The electric guitar and bass work well together and the vocals remind me of very early pre2005 Arctic Monkeys songs.

"When The World stops Spinning" feels like a Reytons track, also including the fuzzy rock sounds of "The golden age". This song has a more catchy and early rock style than the majority of the songs, the instrumental sections are incredible and action packed. Some of the guitar riffs in "When The World stops Spinning" have a strong 1980s rock vibe.

I'm Winchester 7 and am based out of Atlanta, GA. Our bassist, Phil Voorhees, resides in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and drummer, Jack Kane, is itinerant within the United Kingdom. We call our style indie ukulele rock as we're certainly indie; I play an electric ukulele, and we're much more of a rock band than the ukulele bit would seem to imply.

The Argos Holiday album is a massive and colorful record that feels great to listen to as it takes you through vibrant and fun pop rock with a certain swagger and character.

Loaded with musical and vocal hooks, the album does an excellent job of bringing sounds together to create something that's sonically all it's own...

TSWS: Okay let's start with the Argos Holiday album. This record has some awesome energy

and a sound that crosses garage rock with classic rock and more in between. Where did

this record come from?

WINCHESTER 7: Thank you very much. It’s always great to hear when that comes

through. We had a lot of fun making it and set out from the start to do something different.

It seems that the old classic rock that everyone's dad enjoys is slowly disappearing, but Winchester 7 & the Runners are providing a beam of hope and refusing to let that nostalgic music fade away.

Started by Georgia-based musician Winchester 7, he is accompanied in this project by the Runners, made up of Phil Voorhees (bass) from Amsterdam, and Britonian Jack Kane (drums). Their fusion of garage rock and indie rock has a twang of traditional American rock and that typical lo-garage sound...Jangly ukulele notes are seen throughout the nine tracks with Jack and Phil’s drums and bass support the ear-catching melodies...You can instantly feel the professionalism through their music and getting the full sonic landscape of their diverse garage rock...This is powerful music from an interesting group of musicians and breaks away from the conventional guitar-based “indie band”...

Following their well-received 2019 single ‘When The World Stops Spinning’, the lads released a full-length album entitled Argos Holiday. We had a chance to speak with Winchester 7 (vocals and ukelele), Phil Voorhees (bass) and Jack Kane (drums) about Argos Holiday, future plans and reality shows.

OSR: How did Winchester 7 & The Runners come about?

Winchester 7: Well, I’m Winchester 7 and these two were pulling a runner.

Kane: We weren’t fast enough, obviously!

Winchester 7: Well, after I caught up with them it turned out that they rocked! I had an electric ukulele so it was that or back to the Dome.

As many of the details behind Winchester 7 & The Runners are still coming to light, I wouldn’t profess to know the entire story of this band, but I have discovered a great snapshot view of some information that overall, certainly connected with me personally, and I’d imagine many of you will feel the same. I used to think it was a mindset that came along with being a writer…but I’m willing to extend it to the music & art world at-large as well – no matter what we do, how well we do it, how often or how little – us creative types tend to feel fraudulent at times, or like we never use our skillsets to their maximum potential. You can work around the clock and still feel that way, even with all that effort put in – but it hits you harder when you’re not immersed in applying your talents to what you believe they were truly meant for, or using them as much as you’d like to be. LIFE…has an extremely nasty tendency to get in the way of living our dreams…and sometimes ya gotta draw that line in the sand, definitively make a monumental change of some sort, shake yourself outta the slumber of routine…and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

So yes…you better believe I’ve got a lot of love and respect for Winchester 7 doing exactly that.

...

Generating interest and momentum proves to be zero problem as “When The World Stops Spinning” kicks into its blissfully distorted melodic energy. Right off the drop, you can hear the catchiness, you can hear the fun you’d imagine has been created in that whole phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes-of-a-midlife-crisis would come with it, and there’s a killer mix of treble-up awesomeness to be experienced from start to finish. To me, this was like…man…somewhere in between like, Thomas Dolby and The Dandy Warhols combined their wild ideas and addictive grooves together and “When The World Stops Spinning” came out as a result. If you’re familiar with both, you’ll hear what I’m talking about for sure, & you’ll be equally impressed by what a range of sound/style that covers & how much it all fits together. There is a wonderful frenetic energy that runs rampantly throughout this opening cut that leads directly to a remarkable first impression of what Winchester 7 & The Runners are capable of – they’ve clearly put thought into what would make the greatest gateway into Argos Holiday, and they were 100% right.

Their third already and that third album has turned out to be a surprising album, with a nice opener like 'When the world stops spinning'. A nice song, just nice to join. Well produced, just like the rest of the album by the way...'Argos Holiday' is a nice album. The best song could be 'Gonna start right now', which is a nice blues rock track that leans against the old grunge. It is notable for the strong production, which we hear everywhere on the album. This is one of the songs that make you want to hear the album more often. 'Argos Holiday' has more beautiful songs of course. READ MORE
Winchester 7 & the Runnerstag:winchester7andtherunners.com,2005:Post/65040452020-12-20T13:00:35-05:002020-12-20T13:00:35-05:00IndieBandGuru: WINCHESTER 7 & THE RUNNERS GO ON AN ‘ARGOS HOLIDAY’
For any band making original music, there must be a desire to create something fresh and new. From the first jangly guitar-like notes and steadfast drumming, we get a hint that this track may not stray too far from its legendary indie rock predecessors. It hearkens back to a time when guitars shimmered, and shoved throbbing bass and drum arrangements, supporting ear-catching melodies bouncing over the top. The song is so bright it’s practically glowing, with a simply layered arrangement that embraces both distortion and playful spontaneity.
